When was the last time you updated your PC security measures?

The internet is a great source of many new opportunities. However, as online solutions become more sophisticated, so do attempts by unscrupulous individuals to exploit these opportunities. From time to time, phishing attempts are reported in the news with online electronic banking systems being common targets.

HSBC takes security seriously, not only when you use our internet banking services, but when you use the internet generally. As part of our ongoing commitment to you, our customers, we would like to take this opportunity to remind you of some key points to ensure your systems are protected.

  • Make sure your software version is up-to-date and has the latest security patches. Periodically, vulnerabilities are discovered in programmes running on your desktop. The software publisher will then release a 'patch' to correct this weakness. Virus writers and hackers regularly exploit these weaknesses to gain unauthorised access to those PCs that have not been patched
  • Install anti-virus software. You may already be using anti-virus software, but to be effective, the software should be updated on a regular basis with the latest virus definition files
  • Use personal firewalls. A personal firewall helps protect your computer and its contents from outsiders on the internet by restricting unauthorised traffic to and from your PC
  • Read our Security Guidelines. Depending on the HSBCnet security access device used by your company, it is extremely important that you keep all passwords, memorable answers, security answers, Smart Cards or Security Device PINs secure at all times
  • Use an anti-spyware programme. Spyware is a malicious programme which runs on your computer to monitor and record your internet browsing habits and history
