HSBC Private Equity (UK) (HPE)

HPE is the UK mid-market private equity investment business of the HSBC Group and is part of HSBC Principal Investments.

HPE focuses on partnering with management teams and clients of HSBC Bank plc in management buyout, replacement capital and development capital opportunities with an equity requirement from HSBC of upwards of GBP10 million and enterprise value of GBP20 million to GBP300 million.

Website of Britton TACO Britton is one of the largest extrusion and plastic packaging manufacturers in the UK, manufacturing a diverse range of packaging products for the food and beverage, banking, security, logistics, construction, hygiene and medical industries from three sites around the UK. HPE supported the buyout of Britton in February 2008.
Website of Viking Moorings Viking Moorings is a market leader in the design, rental and sale of mooring systems for drilling rigs and single hull vessels, operating from offices in Scotland, Norway, Australia and Singapore. Viking was acquired from Inflexion Private Equity and management, who both made significant re-investment into the deal, in July 2009.
Realised investments
Website of Diagnostic Monitoring Systems TDG is the parent company of Glasgow-based Diagnostic Monitoring Systems, a market leader in condition monitoring products and services for electrical utilities, particularly in emerging markets. HPE supported the buyout of TDG in January 2008 and the subsequent acquisition of PD Tech Engineering AG in May 2008. TDG was sold to Qualitrol Corporation, a subsidiary of Danaher Corporation, in April 2009.
Website of Amtech Power Software Amtech is a market leading building services software and solutions group, specialising in the provision of electrical design, certification, estimating and accounting products and services. HPE supported the management-led buyout of Amtech in July 2006 and the subsequent acquisitions of Estimation Ltd in May 2007, NES in May 2008 and TSI Luckins in October 2008. HPE realised its investment in Amtech in March 2010 via a secondary buyout backed by Primary Capital.

Mahmoud Atalla Mahmoud Atalla, Head of HSBC Private Equity (UK)
Mahmoud joined the HSBC Group in 1998. He has worked with HSBC's investment banking and private equity investment businesses in London, Dubai and New York. He rejoined HSBC from Montagu Private Equity, where he focused on UK buyouts. He has an MSc from the London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE) in Politics of the World Economy and a BSc from the University of Bristol in Economics and Politics.
Grant O'Neill Grant O'Neill, Investment Director
Grant joined HSBC in 2008 after spending four years with Nikko Principal Investments, working on a wide range of mid-market UK transactions. Prior to this, he was with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), working in their business regeneration practice. He is a Chartered Accountant (ICANZ) and has a BCom in Accounting from the University of Otago.
Patrick Sixsmith Patrick Sixsmith, Investment Manager
Patrick joined the HSBC Group in 2005 and has worked in its private equity division since 2006. He also worked in HSBC's global markets business and its Shariah-compliant unit – HSBC Amanah – in both London and Dubai. Patrick has a BSc in Mathematics from Imperial College London.
Patrick Sixsmith Helen Posner, Associate
Helen joined the HSBC Group in 2004 and has since analysed private equity investment solutions for Asset Management and Private Banking clients, and more recently, private equity funds for HSBC Principal Investments. She has a BSc (Hons) in Banking, Finance and Management from Loughborough University.
Richard Cole Richard Cole, Global Head of Principal Investments and Private Equity
Richard joined the HSBC Group in 1980. He was Global Head of Project and Export Finance before moving across to become the Global Head of Principal Investments and Private Equity. He is a Chartered Management Accountant (ACMA) and holds an MA from Cambridge.
